Austin 2030: Building Austin’s Postsecondary Promise
Building Austin’s Postsecondary Promise
The Challenge
Austin 2030 is a cross-sector network of school districts, higher education institutions, nonprofits, businesses, civic leaders, and community partners committed to improving education outcomes for Austin’s children and youth. Like many communities, Austin faces persistent and inequitable postsecondary outcomes—particularly for students from low-income backgrounds and students of color—despite the presence of strong institutions and programs. Leaders across sectors recognize that no single organization can solve these challenges alone; meaningful progress requires coordinated action, shared accountability, and sustained collaboration with students and families.
As Austin 2030 sharpened its focus on improving postsecondary attainment through the development of a college promise, the network faced the challenge of moving from shared commitment to collective action. Establishing a durable, cross-sector effort required clarity of purpose, trusted leadership, aligned partners, and a backbone structure capable of sustaining momentum over time. Without intentional facilitation, resourcing, and governance, even well-aligned networks risk fragmentation, uneven engagement, and stalled progress at critical moments of growth and transition..
Our Approach
VIDA Collaborative supported Austin 2030 from its earliest stages through a phased, capacity-building approach designed to move the network from vision to durable implementation. Beginning in 2019, VIDA helped launch the effort by raising early philanthropic support, recruiting members of the guiding coalition, and facilitating foundational conversations that established shared goals, norms, and accountability structures. This early work focused on building trust across sectors while centering equity, student voice, and long-term systems change.
As the network matured, VIDA served as a strategic partner to Austin 2030—designing and facilitating learning experiences for the guiding coalition, supporting governance and decision-making, and helping translate shared priorities into concrete actions. The team led the hiring process for the Austin 2030 Network Lead, raised philanthropic resources to sustain the work, and supported policy development and external communications, including recommendations to the Austin ISD Board of Trustees related to College, Career, and Military Readiness. VIDA also project-managed key deliverables such as the Greater Austin Postsecondary Landscape Research Brief and supported a thoughtful transition from consultant-led startup to permanent staff leadership, ensuring continuity, clarity, and long-term sustainability.
Projects Results
Through this partnership, Austin 2030 successfully launched and stabilized a citywide education partnership grounded in shared accountability and cross-sector alignment. The network established a strong guiding coalition, secured philanthropic investment, and built the infrastructure needed to advance collective work on postsecondary success. Clear governance structures, consistent learning opportunities, and shared data helped partners move from parallel efforts toward coordinated strategy.
Austin 2030 also strengthened its role as a trusted convener and thought partner in Austin’s education ecosystem. The development of research briefs, policy recommendations, and public-facing updates elevated shared understanding of postsecondary pathways and informed local decision-making. Most importantly, the transition to permanent staff leadership positioned Austin 2030 to sustain and deepen its work—laying the foundation for a long-term college promise that reflects community needs and aspirations.

“Before working with VIDA, we were struggling with articulating early relational health (ERH) in a way that was both grounded in research and actionable across our work, and now we have a clear, cohesive unifying framework. The biggest shift we experienced through our work with VIDA was moving from a general definition of ERH to a shared, structured framework that we can consistently apply across the field. What sets VIDA apart from other consultants or partners we’ve worked with is their ability to listen deeply, incorporate diverse stakeholder perspectives, and translate that input into something highly usable.”

“We came to VIDA Collaborative at a pivotal moment — we had a unique offering with real, demonstrated impact on student reading and math outcomes, but no clear path to scale it. VIDA helped us change that. We left with a sharp understanding of our impact, a realistic picture of what scaling would require, and clarity on the key decisions ahead. If your organization is trying to make sense of a complex challenge or chart a course forward, I’d wholeheartedly recommend VIDA. Their team brings both rigor and care to the work — and they’ll make sure you have what you need to move forward with confidence.”

“What sets VIDA apart from other consultants or partners we’ve worked with is their authenticity and deep commitment to cultural responsiveness. They show up as true thought partners and trusted community allies, bringing both strategic expertise and a genuine understanding of the communities we serve. Throughout our work together, it’s been clear they approach the project with the same level of care and ownership as if it were their own, and the deliverables reflect exactly what they promise, making the partnership especially meaningful.”

“I would recommend VIDA to organizations that are interested in gaining insights from qualitative research because VIDA understands that community voice is data. Our organization already valued it but did not have the capacity to host an engagement session with the time and energy it requires in order to be successful and trauma-informed as we work directly with program participants.”

“Working at VIDA feels like stepping into a space where purpose and possibility meet every day. I have the opportunity to work within and across systems, partnering collaboratively with leaders who are deeply committed to their communities. Together, we think creatively to design thoughtful responses to real challenges. Each day brings the chance to contribute to something bigger than myself, and the best part is that I get to work alongside people who believe change is possible.”

“Working at VIDA is different than working at other places because people are trusted to bring their full thinking and humanity into the work. Different ways of thinking aren’t viewed as liabilities or inefficiency, but essential to finding solutions to complex problems.”
